The Lady of the Gardenias, also known as "Lady Day", passed away in 1959, leaving behind such magnificent albums as "Lady In Satin" and "Billie Holiday", as well as "Strange Fruit", her first big hit, a poignant song denouncing the lynchings suffered by many African-Americans in the American South at the time.
