PATRICK SHIROISHI
United States
Patrick Shiroishi, a key figure in the revitalization of Los Angeles's improvised music scene, is known for bringing voice to the void.
His solo work on the saxophone revolves around the Japanese concept of "ma" (間), or negative space, which is the artistic interpretation of seemingly empty times and spaces. In his performances, Shiroishi achieves the remarkable feat of infusing as much life into volcanic eruptions as into the silences, echoes, and sound ricochets that populate the room. This exploration of emptiness is not merely aesthetic; it also serves biographical and political purposes. Like George Pérec in "La Disparition," absence becomes a means to question his Japanese-American family roots, which intersect with the history of Japanese internment camps established in the United States during World War II.

THE SYNC with Eve Risser, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Mike Reed, Louis Laurain
United States, France
Four musicians constant in their inconstancy, from soothing breezes to gusty squalls, you can count on The Sync to always rush into the escape.
As a quartet, French and North American musicians formed The Sync during the early days of The Bridge, the transatlantic network. That was a decade ago, but some bonds time and distance cannot break. As a trio, now a new Bermuda Triangle, and free of all ties (or rather, free in their attachments), pianist Eve Risser, cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, and drummer Mike Reed invite trumpeter Louis Laurain to their reunion, to their new swashbuckling adventures.
