At just thirty years old, the poet, singer and songwriter of Egyptian origin, Abdullah Miniawy has collaborated with many musicians from jazz and improvised music (Erik Truffaz, Yom, rapper Marc Nammour, oud player Kamilya Jubran), and has trod the most prestigious stages, from the Avignon Festival to the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.
With his powerful voice, his heartbreaking melodies, his poignant texts often inspired by the social and political realities of his country of origin, this enthusiast of classical Arabic literature knows how to find the words to touch the heart.
Awarded a Victoire du Jazz in 2023 in the world music category for his album Le Cri du Caire, a project whose roots are in the ferment of protest that shook the nights of Cairo after the Egyptian revolution, he is now taking a new path with his trio, in the company of two trombonists, Jules Boittin and Robinson Khoury, well known at the Saint-Denis Jazz Club where he performed with his project Mÿa and with the group Sarab.
“All voices of exile are colored by the desire to feel the depth of their culture again. When you call upon a voice within you after years of disconnection, it is received in fractions. To bring them together, you have to retune them.”
