“Okun” means ‘rope’ in Yoruba, the language used in Santería, the Afro-Cuban religion.
The “rope” that binds things together: the jazz guitar of Parisian colorist Aurélien Bouly and the innovative drumming of Lester Alonso Vasquez. A singular fusion served up by an overexcited Franco-Cuban team.
The “rope” that links mankind to the divine; a mystical plunge into the sacred rhythms of batá drums that summon the Orichás, Afro-Cuban divinities.
The “rope” that links jazz and Cuban rhythms is a thread of fantasy stories: Django Reinhardt in the middle of a carnival in Santiago, Horace Silver conducting a Charanga, Wes Montgomery guitarist of a Mambo conjuto playing until morning in a Havana casino... The quays of the Seine have a Malecon color, Paris is ablaze, intoxicated, perhaps debauched, but above all improvised..
