Until her death in 2006 at the age of 87, Anita O'Day was a survivor of swing and certainly one of the greatest jazz singers, in the eternal shadow of the three greats: Billie, Ella and Sarah, whom she did more than just speak informally with...
But Anita O'Day also had a journey strewn with pitfalls: that of a white singer in the land of African-American jazz, that of a woman of character, independent but also fragile, who flirted with death twice rather than once and frequented prison on a regular basis...
It is no coincidence, therefore, that her autobiography is entitled "High Times, Hard Times". Ups and downs... Because like her vocal prowess, Anita O'Day's life was a huge roller coaster, with sometimes dizzying loops.
