She began singing in jazz clubs at the age of 16, and soon attracted attention for her powerful voice and improvisational flair. Carter stands out for her reinterpretations of jazz standards, bringing a personal touch and emotional depth to each tune. She was known for her inventive use of rhythm and melody, often playing with traditional musical structures. Her unique vocal technique, which blended elements of scat and improvisation, influenced many artists and helped redefine the role of the voice in jazz.
